Class Three

Welcome to Class Three!

Our topic for Spring 1 is 'Curious about Cornwall!' and we will be answering the question,

"What makes Cornwall a wonderful place to live?"

In English, through the ‘Talk for Writing’ approach, we will be immersing ourselves in the text of ‘The Cornish Stone Dragon’.  We will learn and retell the text, write character and setting descriptions, produce persuasive writing about visiting Cornwall, diary entries, letters, advertisements, poetry and comparisons before innovating and inventing our own creatures. We will also be writing non-chronological reports about tin mining in Cornwall. In our class reading sessions, we will be reading the book ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes.

In Maths, we will continue with a focus on ‘Multiplication and Division’. We will be developing our knowledge of times tables using Power Maths, Times Table Rockstars and through practising times table songs. We will learn different methods for division and make links between multiplication and division.

In R.E, we explore our school value of Love. We will continue with our Judaism unit and we will ask:

‘Why is the Torah so important to Jewish people?’

In Science, we will be learning about famous scientists and inventors. Especially scientists from Cornwall! For example, Davey and Watt. We will discuss and design what we would invent if we were scientists! We will be asking: ‘If you were a scientist, what would you invent?’

In Geography, we will be developing our geographical skills and fieldwork. We will be using maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries. We will name and locate parts of Cornwall and countries and cities in the UK. We will be asking the question: ‘Why do people enjoy visiting Cornwall?’

In History, we will be learning about mining in Cornwall and Cornish heritage. We will be learning about the life of a tin miner and why the crust of a Cornish pasty was so important. We will design and make our own version of a Cornish pasty! We will ask the question: ‘What was it like to live in Cornwall in the past?’

In Music, we will be exploring the Pop genre of music and listening to a range of musicians in this genre. The song we will be focusing on is called ‘The Dragon Song’.

In PSHE, we will explore ways to keep ourselves safe. We will be working through these units on the SCARF PSHE programme.

Check out this page for photos below, showing all of the wonderful things we have been doing in our learning at school and at home!

At home, you can make sure you are working towards your next Reading Karate Band and you can access Sum Dog, Purple Mash, Charanga, Spelling Shed and Times Table Rock Stars using the logins that are on the children's reading records. Remember to practise your spellings that are sent home at the beginning of each half term ready for a weekly spelling test. Our spelling test is every Friday.

Remember that you can also be completing the exciting challenges for the '50 things to do before leaving Primary school'.
