EYFS Overview

Intent Implementation and Impact of EYFS

In EYFS our intention is to create a safe, happy and purposeful environment which creates learning opportunities for children. We cultivate an atmosphere which helps the children to develop their confidence and allows them to become independent learners, creating an ethos which we wish to spread throughout the school.

It is important that children feel excited and content with their move into our EYFS setting and to ensure this we have a very clear transition process. Children are welcome to attend 5 transition sessions where they come to school for a short amount of time and play with the current Reception children to allow them to get used to the setting and the staff they will be working with.

Our classroom has activities set up which reflect each area of learning. Activities are a mixture of adult lead and independent learning. We use both our indoor classroom and our outdoor space to give children a full range of experiences. We record the children’s learning journey using an online resource called Tapestry, observations are recorded and can be sent to parents on a daily basis so they can keep abreast of their progress.

The first term is predominantly settling the children into a daily routine involving familiar activities which help to settle them into a full day at school. This enables them to build their confidence, along with allowing the staff to develop relationships with the children to understand their individual personalities and needs. At this point our day is mostly play based with more structured short sessions being added throughout the year.

We follow We follow the Read Write Inc approach to teaching Reading and Phonics, supplemented with additional reading materials. Our approach is systematic, consistent and rigorous in order that all children become readers as quickly as possible. We use the same phonics program across the school providing continuity and a vehicle for guaranteed progression. This starts in the first few days of term and children learn one sound per day. To begin with this runs alongside a set of listening activities to develop the children’s understanding of rhyming words and then blending sounds together. Once the children can confidently blend they will move onto reading Dittys and books which contain simple sentences. RWI sessions take place four times a week starting with 30 minutes at the beginning of the school year and then for an hour in the summer term. Pupils are taught in ability groups from Reception to Year 2 thus enabling them to be taught according to their reading level not their age. Teaching is very precise and tailored to the needs of each child irrespective of year group

Developing a reading culture is very important and children are encouraged to take books home and share them with parents from the first week in September. Books are matched to a child’s ability and as they progress books will become increasingly more difficult.

The impact of this approach to EYFS has been proven over the last few years to nurture well balanced, confident children who possess a can do attitude to learning. We have also found that our children are ready to transition into KS1 where they can continue their learning journey.
